Big Joan are a four-piece rock band. They formed in Southampton in 1999 and are now based in the city of Bristol. They play a distinctive, bass-heavy style of music influenced by punk rock, dub, jungle, industrial, and breakcore. This has led to them being booked for free parties and rave-orientated club nights as well as venues on the indie circuit.
The main outlet for their music is their own Blood Red Sounds label, which has also released bands such as Geisha, Mooz and Hunting Lodge. They have also had releases on independent labels such as Death$ucker Recordings and Sink & Stove Records.
Big Joan's debut album 'Insects & Engines' came out in 2004 and was followed by 'The Flood EP' in 2006. Tracks from both releases have been given airplay by UK DJs such as BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens and the late John Peel. 'The Flood EP' included remixes by Shitmat, Parasite, Terry Edwards, Bronnt Industries Kapital and My Ambulance Is On Fire.
Big Joan's German singer has been known as Annette Berlin since she was mistakenly credited under that name on an album by the band Madnomad. The other three members of the band are English.
Their second album is expected some time in 2008.
