Lit - Atomic
The first song that jumps out at you on this album is "Last Time Again" with it's sirenlike intro riff it announces itself as this album's "My Own Worst Enemy". Which makes you wonder why they released the relatively dark & subdued "Lipstick and Bruises" as the first single. With repeated listenings, however, Last Time Again has become my least favourite track. It's catchiness is superficial, and as time goes on the rest the songs reveal their respective merits.
Sure, the production on the whole album is nice & chunky, a bit dirty (not too pristine, but everything in it's place) & the vocals fit in nicely with the other instruments. Likely second & third singles should be the sarcastic "Addicted" and the upbeat, semi acoustic "Sunny Weather". Yes, Sunny Weather does sound exactly like it's title would suggest, but as with the bulk of this album, the lyrics concern relationship breakups. In fact they would suggest that the ostensibly suave AJ Popoff is a bit of a loser with the ladies. It's almost nerdcore!
Chances are, though, that the record company is going to lean on the string laced ballad "Meantime" sooner or later. Which would be tolerable actually, it's quiet & pleasant but in no way veers anywhere near the kind of "candyfloss dipped in syrup" sickliness that a lot of American rock bands resort to when trying to break the top 40. Thank God. It's a nice change of pace on the album, but nothing special.
The rest is heads down grinding rock & roll with harmony vocals, not really punk, but I think everybody has realised by now that Lit were never really punk in the first place. The album as a whole is stronger & deeper than "A Place In The Sun" but lacks the single standout to get 'em another big hit. That's a good thing though, the very definition of "a Grower".
