My Ruin - A Prayer Under Pressure of Violent Anguish
The first thing I do when reviewing an album is put it on while I look at the inlay. A prayer etc (you don’t think I’m typing all that again do you?) has a really pretty inlay. Loads of nice artwork, photo’s of the whole band (not just Tairrie B, who was a little over-emphasised in their last offering) And then I read the lyrics.
Were it not for the font (and the odd telltale sign) I would have thought I was in an Alanis Morrisette Album cover. Worried, I skipped to the track in question, and was pleased to find that My ruin have reverted to that old Goth-metal motto; “Sing what you like, as long as it sounds HEAVY.” Rockstar is definitely worth checking out for this reason alone.
Other than that observation, it seems we have here a band that are trying a little too hard to recapture the success of their first album. If you’re looking for another “June 10th” though, you’ve come to the wrong place. However if you always skipped the slower ones, you’ll love this album. It has the standard intro & outro (which IS a word DAMIT) though nowhere near as good as “the band started to tune up…”
Altogether, this album has some great tracks, and viewed on it’s own I’d recommend it heartily. Plus if you buy it from the right place you might find one with a really cool red jewel case.
The only flaw I can see is that while I was expecting more of the last album and I got something else entirely. Which is fair enough I suppose, but they have gone a little off track. There’s some great riffage and good tunes, but if you’re picking a My Ruin Album, get this one second.
