Voice of Dissent - Puppets and their Masters EP

I awoke this morning to the sound of the postman shoving a large envelope through my letterbox. I jumped out of bed hoping that one of the many Items I've been waiting for had arrived. I was almost disappointed as I opened it and found it was a another CD Demo....Then I realised I had requested this one as it was made by a band that contain ex members of IKJD, Sightless Riot and Phallicide, although now intrigued nothing comes before my morning cuppa, Mars bar and smoke, as the kettle was boiling I took out the written contents and read the "About Voice of Dissent" It's Straight and to the point and I gather from it that this band is playing musical chairs between one band and another..

The CD contains four tracks clocking in at just over 23 minutes and they've included a lyric sheet, which is a nice touch but led me to believe wrongly that they were a hardcore "shouty" band.

Two cigarettes a coffee and my daily work , rest and play over I stuck the CD in the player and sat down to listen! Impressed? Hell yeah!! They wear their influences well Rage, Zep and Hip Hop with a Punk edge, I'd also add Senser to that list...

The first track "Only a Game" is about mindless football thugs and although compared to the USA and it's gun/Drugs culture covered by American Rap/Rock/Hip Hop artists it may seem a little tame in nature by comparison but by sone strange coincidence I had read an interview with Justin Fashanu conducted by Tony Parsons for the Evening Standard the previous evening and it kinda hit home. Justin, incase your not aware is a Black footballer and is openly Gay. It told of his problems in a world of "macho" men and mistreament even at FA management level. So as tame as the subject matter of "only a Game" sounds it hit the spot and it's nice to see issues covered by bands that have relevance to a UK audience rather than the formula of following American trends.

The second track "Sell outs" is aimed at the recent spate of Rap artists that are more image than content and with lyrics like "Players play games they can't even finnish-when music's replaced with image for business" and my favorite "Your R n B style is more pussy than cat" Calling Eminem, if only he had half the soul.~

Tracks three and four "In the Zone" and "Legacy X" is where VOD shine, great riffs and lyrics all delivered well and are sure to be highlights of any live show. So in conclusion a very good demo and another good production job from the Whitehouse studio.. VOD know their stuff and they certainly know where it's at.. Check 'em! ! Word!
