NailStorm - Subcontortion
Right, here we have the second demo effort from Sheffields finest extreme metallers NailStorm, and what an effort it is. Its one of those demos that has a why the fuck arent they signed? feel to it.
Opening with Godbleed, a solid, grinding bastard of a song with deathy/chuggy feeling to it at first, but then introducing some of the all-over-the-place-ness of Dillinger and even Cryptopsy, before descending into a chugged groove part, which morphs in to a sick polyrhythm that still fucks with my head.
Self Existence is a short sharp shock of a song, starting with a blast and finishing with a catchy as hell, fat bastard groove part.
Virtual Homicide shows the bands ability to cover almost every aspect of the extreme Metal spectrum, starting yet again with a blast and exploring the whole range of tempos available to a metal band, throwing in some mad time signatures and generally keeping you on your toes, until it breaks down into a jazz break.
Basically NailStorms main strength is that they write complex, intricately structured songs, yet they know when to go back to basics and hit a groove. Oh, and the vocals are something else. They are an awesome, unholy, dual voice squeal/scream/grunt/roar that put my own Norwegian Black/Mortician style vocals to shame.
In a nutshell, this disc is criminally good, and should be purchased while it is still awesome value, before these guys get signed to the major label they deserve to be signed to.
