Moldy Peaches - The Moldy Peaches
Most ‘real’ music fans would look at twosome the Moldy Peaches, laugh and then run away. Its official. The Moldy Peaches, who hail from New York City and who are currently supporting the Strokes on a worldwide tour, could never fit into any conventional genres that people like to assign bands to. As anyone who saw them play at the fleece and firkin a month or two ago would testify to, nothing about this band could be stuffed screaming into any category. I mean, come on...Kimya dresses up as a rabbit and Adam is either a sailor or Robin Hood!
The Moldy Peaches are terrible musicians. Lets get that straight from the beginning. Many of the songs on their self-titled album feature nothing than the guitar of Adam and the voice of Kimya, and perhaps the wailing of whoever happens to be in the studio when they are recording.
However the focus of this band is not the music, it is the sexual, voyeuristic, drugs-related, self-confessed-cartoon-loving lyrics and the innocent delivery of Kimya - ie Steak for Chicken’s ‘my girl’s got a dick hangin’ out of her shorts’ sung nursery rhyme style, or the twelve bar blues of ‘Downloading Porn with Davo’. All 19 songs on their album has something different, from the self-explanatory ‘Whos Got the Crack?’ to ‘NYC is a Graveyard’, and they all hover somewhere in between pre teen innocence and the discovery of sex, drugs and an acoustic guitar. But although a majority of the songs approach taboo subjects in a brash, lewd way, there are moments of sweet tenderness with songs like ‘Jorge Regula’ and ‘Lazy Confessions’, both duets featuring both Kimya and Adam.
So, in conclusion, if you love your music more than your mother and strive for instrumental perfection, don’t buy this album, you will be crying for weeks to come. However if you like thundercats, immaturity, pornography (admit it...ive been watching you and those magazines) and merriment, buy this now!
